An important bulletin

We here at FurLowRiders.com are always trying to be conscious about important issues facing the world. Whether it’s earthquake victims in Haiti, hospitals healing sick children, or the health of our global environment, there is no cause, big or small, that we ignore.

In that spirit, we invite you to lend your support to a new cause: bringing Paprika Pringles to the United States. Why should our European friends be the only ones to enjoy the crispy deliciousness of these paprika-flavored potato* chips? With your help, we can bring this tasty snack to the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Yes we can!

Fur Low Riders feature UW-L talent, The Racquet, January 25, 2010.

By Lauren Seidl

What do you get when you combine an attorney, a professor, and a chancellor? The Fur Low Riders—a bluesy rock band containing some of UW- La Crosse’s finest professionals.

The music-loving trio, made up of Chancellor Joe Gow, psychology professor Bart VanVoorhis and attorney Nizam Arain, first joined forces at an annual party VanVoorhis hosted in August.

VanVoorhis had recently taken his drums home after 20 years of storage at his parents’ house, and Gow, not wanting to pass up a chance to jam, requested that the drums be set up for the party. By the end of the night, the two found a bassist in Arain, the husband of a UW-L professor, and the band was born.

Thanks to Second Supper for recognizing the FurLow Riders as “Probably UW-L’s Coolest Band” in their December 17, 2009 issue focusing on the local La Crosse music scene.

We are optimistic that next year the word “probably” will no longer be necessary.

Looking for a way to cheer up during the economic slump?

Try the “FurLow Riders.”

Instead of letting state-mandated furloughs get them down, this new music group – a chancellor, a professor and an attorney – are staying up late to beat the blues by playing it.

They will perform 1960s blues-rock and the 1950s traditional blues that influenced it at 10:45 p.m. Friday at the Popcorn Tavern, 308 Fourth St. S. The performance is free.

About the Band

Comment here

The FurLow Riders are a blues and rock band that formed in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in the fall of 2009, named in honor of the state-imposed furlough days for public employees. Their repertoire includes blues classics (Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon), rock and roll (Chuck Berry, the Kingsmen), and blues rock of the ’60s and ’70s (the Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors).

Lead singer and guitarist Joe Gow serves as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse (UW-L), and has been singing and playing the blues for many years. Drummer Bart VanVoorhis, a professor of psychology at UW-L, recently dusted off his drum kit after a long hiatus and hasn’t missed a beat. Bassist Nizam Arain, a recent transplant to La Crosse from Chicago, practices law and teaches in UW-L’s political science department. The band also includes Joe and Bart’s respective partners: frequent guest vocalist Betsy Valentine and keyboardist/bagpiper Carmen Wilson, who is also a psychology professor and Affirmative Action Officer at UW-L.
